American Jewish Committee (AJC), in partnership with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, today released Translate Hate: The Catholic Edition, a groundbreaking resource that features Catholic commentary on various entries in AJC’s regularly-cited Translate Hate https://www.ajc.org/translatehate glossary of antisemitic terms, tropes, and memes that help expose and name antisemitism wherever it emerges.
As you may know, recent events involving Pope Francis and the Vatican have challenged Catholic-Jewish relations, demonstrating that we still have a lot of work to do. AJC has spoken out publicly regarding both unfortunate incidents, which you can find here and here , and worked together with other Jewish organizations through the International Jewish Committee on Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC) to convey our concerns. As we navigate these difficult circumstances, Translate Hate: The Catholic Edition, emphasizes the critical importance of paving the way for deeper and wider cooperation in a shared commitment to eradicating antisemitism. It is the product of continued investment in Catholic and Jewish leadership dialogue and is the latest installment in deepening and extending the infrastructure, educational tools, and reach of Catholic-Jewish relations.
USCCB’s allyship and leadership in confronting antisemitism as a threat not only to the Jewish people but also to civilized society more broadly is a key part of the whole-of-society approach AJC is taking to combat anti-Jewish hate in America and around the world.
As the global advocacy organization for the Jewish people, AJC is committed to working closely with our Catholic partners and other faith and ethnic communities to confront antisemitism in all its insidious forms, shaping a new and brighter future for us all.
